Our Approach
Addiction and Mental Health Don't Always Travel Alone.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Kansas — Serving the Kansas City Area
When a mental health condition and a substance use disorder exist together, treating one without the other rarely works. At Sunflower Recovery Center, we treat both at the same time, under one roof, with one compassionate team.
WHAT IS DUAL DIAGNOSIS?
What Is a Co-Occurring Disorder?
A co-occurring disorder — sometimes called a dual diagnosis — is when someone experiences both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. This is more common than most people realize.
Nearly half of people dealing with addiction are also living with an underlying mental health condition. Sometimes, the mental health struggle came first and substance use became a way to cope. Other times, prolonged substance use contributed to or worsened a mental health condition. Often, both are happening simultaneously.
The relationship between these two things is complex, but the solution doesn’t have to be. With the right integrated care, both can be treated together, which is where real, lasting recovery becomes possible.

OUR INTEGRATED TREATMENT APPROACH
Treating the Whole Person — Not Just the Symptoms
Dual diagnosis treatment at Sunflower isn’t two separate programs running side by side. It’s one integrated plan — built around you — that addresses addiction and mental health together, from the same clinical team.
We believe that sustainable recovery requires understanding why someone turned to substances in the first place.
For many people, that answer is deeply tied to emotional pain, unresolved trauma, or an untreated mental health condition. When we address those underlying causes, the path forward becomes much clearer.
OUR INTEGRATED TREATMENT APPROACH
Evidence-Based Therapies
Our dual diagnosis program draws from a range of clinically proven approaches tailored to each person’s needs:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — identifying and reshaping thought patterns that drive harmful behavior
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) — building emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) — strengthening personal commitment to change
- Trauma-Focused Therapies — for those whose mental health struggles are rooted in past trauma
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) — when appropriate, FDA-approved medications to stabilize and support recovery
- Psychoeducational Groups — helping clients understand their diagnosis and the science behind recovery
- Family Systems Approach — involving loved ones in the healing process
